HP ZBook 15

The ZBook series has been with us for a year now and has already managed to become one of the best options for professionals who need a high-performance workstation. We have had the opportunity to review the new HP ZBook 15, a computer that is trying to achieve a delicate balance of power, design and a degree of portability.

The new HP workstation surprises us even before starting it. The American company presents us with an exquisite construction of equipment of a modern and elegant design. The quality of materials is sublime, the combination of brushed edges and made from an aluminum and magnesium alloy is magnificent and it is evident that this is a machine made for work.

At this point, it is worth noting the quality of the keyboard that HP has incorporated. It is probably the best we have tried in the lab MuyComputer. The feel of the keys is perfect; it incorporates a full numeric keypad and typing feels very similar to typing on a desktop computer keyboard. The trackpad has also surprised us as it is accurate and a more than adequate size; by the way, Thinkpad fans will find the classic trackpoint between the G and H keys, interesting for occasional use or if you are accustomed to other computer keys.

To be fair, the HP ZBook 15 is a more portable laptop; with dimensions of 38.15 x 25.7 x 3.05 cm. and a weight of 2.8 kilos. This is bulkier than a MacBook Pro and almost a kilo heavier. A review of the technical specifications serves to remind us why.

  • Intel Core i7-4800MQ Processor with integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics
  • Intel QM87 Motherboard
  • 15 inch Screen, 1920 x 1080 pixels with a matte finish
  • 16 Gbytes of RAM (supports up to 32 GB)
  • NVIDIA Quadro K610M GPU
  • Hitachi 1TB GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
  • 256 GB SSD

With these specifications (you still can improve it by customizing the configuration when ordering), it is evident that this is a complete workstation, a product aimed at professional users who want to play on a portable laptop that has an experience like the most powerful desktop. It’s great for scenarios where you can not take a conventional computer (transportation, engineering, architecture, etc.) but you need to run applications that require a lot of hardware.

As expected, Both the operating system (Windows 64 bits at 8.1 default) and any application, we would like to highlight Their exceptional performance in multitasking scenarios and reliable software to get great results of the spectacular graphics card from NVIDIA (Autodesk applications like AutoCAD, DS Solidworks, Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Matlab are certified, to name a few).

In the synthetic tests the HP equipment gets 5663 points in PCMark 7, 6.75 in Cinebench (proof of its excellent processor). The SSD is notable; it starts from zero in less than 25 seconds and almost instantaneously opens even the heaviest of applications.

Regarding connectivity, the device takes advantage of the available space to offer Thunderbolt and DisplayPort, but we can always use an adapter. It has three USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 and a RJ-45 socket a VGA veteran, still an important setting in professional. At this point we miss any HDMI, Firewire or eSATA , although the manufacturer has installed an expansion port for connecting databases to improve the connectivity. Regarding networks, the support is complete: Ethernet Gigabit, WiFi and mobile networks like LTE / HSPA +.

This HP Zbook 15 is packed with details that tip the balance in the corporate world. The integrated fingerprint reader (with proprietary software that works really well) ,support for TPM or SmartCard reader. Finally, note the great battery performance, besides what we expected it has no problems reaching 5 hours of actual use.

HP ZBook 15

The HP Zbook15 is one of the best workstation that we have seen and probably one of the best options that you can buy today. We found few weaknesses we and an almost perfect combination of design, build quality, hardware pointer and clear corporate guidance.

Yes we must recognize that we would have liked a system with more storage ability (although it can be ordered with up to one terabyte of disk space) and a ventilation system that is notable but we should value as a necessary sacrifice, considering that a good hardware is key to keeping the temperature under control and to ensure reliability and stability.

The HP ZBook 15 can be purchased starting at 2100 dollars  in its basic configuration, which is a price that is falls within the range of similar powerful alternative systems, which are aimed at the corporate level. From our point of view, we recommend an outstanding workstation.
