Unlike similar records, the processor used for this feat is the common one you’d find in any store or retailer.
The “Overclocking Knights”, a French group of overclockers, have broken almost every speed record with an Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell processor, with the second highest speed ever reached by a 4770k. However, every record up to now was set by overclockers using EO (Engineering Sample) models, special models Intel sends to manufacturers, OEMs and even professional overclockers. These chips are the absolute best, designed to get the best possible voltages and speeds.
The record (7068.52 MHz) of the French guys, on the other hand, was set with an i7-4770K Retail, the version you can find in any store, along with a Z78 XPOWER motherboard from MSI, two common components you can find pretty much everywhere. Still, they used a nitrogen-based liquid cooling system to keep sub-zero temperatures and help the components reach the highest possible speeds.
