Review: Nvidia Geforce GTX 780Ti

Nvidia is now here to show the best the Kepler architecture can offer: A chip with amazing specs and excellent results.

introduction

Nvidia’s latest model with Kepler architecture is undoubtedly the most powerful graphics chip ever created by this brand, above any other model included the powerful Titan, which once again takes the company to the absolute top of the GPU market.

This model will costs around 700 dollars, cheaper that the Titan, but certainly more expensive than any single-chip graphics cards, which cost around 480 dollars. The price, however, is worth it.

Technical performance

This card shows from the very beginning how powerful it is. This card not only surpasses the Titan –which has a total of 2688 shaders engines- with its 2880 engines, but also offers an 8 % increase in its performance.

The improvements don’t end here, of course. For us, the most impressive is surely the bandwidth , while maintaining its 384- bit bus , it reaches speeds of up to 340GB/s through the use of GDDR5 high-speed memory with a ratio of 7Gbps, more bandwidth than the Radeon R9 290, although these features 5Gbps memory that makes them cheaper. The Geforce GTX 780 ti has 3GB of memory.

This 28-mn card works at 875MHz and 928MHz in turbo mode. It also has 240 texture units, 48 ROPs and a total of 7000 million transistors in an area a little larger than 500 square millimeters. Like we said, it surpasses the Titan in every regard, making it Nvidia’s most powerful card to date.

A well-known design known

Design-wise, this card is the same as the Titan or the Geforce GTX 780. Everything is the same and for us that is certainly good. It is a small 27-centimeter card with dual slot design, great cooling system powered by a turbine and frontal air intake, all classic features from Nvidia’s components.

This card uses two PEG type connectors, a six-pin and an eight-pin one, and a consumption of 250w, the same as the Titan. Its thermal design is also identical, and Nvidia still supports the idea that even their higher-end models can be installed on small computers, which really shows with this model. In fact, models like the Titan are being used in some of the console prototypes that Valve is developing, which are quite small.

It also has two dual-link DVI and HDMI 1.4 connectors and a DisplayPort 1.2 connector; you can connect up to three simultaneous monitors to it.

New features

Nvidia’s software has been greatly evolving: We’ve gone from universal drivers to functional platform that allows PC users to take full advantage of every feature of these cards. We all take for granted the additional support they provide for moderate graphics cards, including integrated processors also many classics, something that makes our computers more efficient and less dependent on a single factor such as the central processor. Nvidia and AMD have made this possible by supporting closed and open standards and especially influencing developers about how they need and what they need to do to increase the performance of their applications.

GPU manufacturers have done everything to make these devices as easy to use as possible for gamers, giving them everything they need. Nvidia’s Geforce Experience is a good example of this, with an application capable of running extensive tests with different titles to get our systems the most suitable configuration so we can always enjoy our games with the exact speed or quality they’re meant to offer.

It also features the “Shadow Play” technology, a new feature capable of recording or broadcasting your game play in real time directly from your GPU without any additional hardware. It can also upload the recorded video to YouTube with the proper format so that our records do not lose quality.

It can record up to 20 minutes recorded in automatic mode and infinite in manual mode. This feature can record automatically at all times without interaction from the user. It can record and broadcast video at 50mbits with H.264 codec, and has a minimal impact on the performance of our card with a resource consumption of less than 10%.

Nvidia is also developing something called G-Sync, a system that allows the vertical frequency o your monitor to always be controlled by the GPU, which will avoid issues such as tearing. Still, we believe very few monitors will actually see a noticeable improvement with this new feature.

Analysis and conclusion

This graphics card undoubtedly repositions Nvidia as the company with the most powerful single-GPU graphics card. The Geforce GTX 780Ti is totally amazing, but is also considerably more expensive than any other card there is, something not everyone may be willing to put up it, at least for the time being.

The Geforce GTX 780Ti is clearly based performance and design-wise on the Titan, as it is small, silent and impeccably designed. The same can be said about the GTX 780, though it is obviously cheaper and not as powerful. The price of the 780Ti is clearly not for everyone, but if you decide to get, make no mistake: you’re getting the world’s indisputably most powerful GPU.
