As a result my last laptop, the ASUS U31SG-AS31, taking an unexpected turn for the worst, I must begin seeking a new replacement for. After nearly 5 days of searching for, I finally decided to but the HP ENVY 17 and after almost 7 days of using it, I can say, it’s really a great laptop, no regrets. Before I begin to list the advantages and disadvantages, I want to let you know the things that I’ve been using this laptop for, gaming, movies, Java programming, Photoshop, music, office work, and onsite tech work. The following are the pros and cons of this laptop I have found:

Best HP gaming laptopProduct Specs: (Price: $1,499)

  • 2nd generation 2.2GHz  Intel Core i7-2670 Processor with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.10 GHz
  • 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 750GB Hard Drive (7200RPM)
  • RadeonHD 7690M with 1024MB GDDR5 and up to 5093MB total
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Port; 3 x USB3.0 Ports
  • 17.3-Inch Screen (1920 x 1080)
  • Genuine Windows®7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Wireless Type:802.11bgn
  • 7 hours Battery Life

-Screen: It is realy a very nice experience to watch moview on this 17.3 inch 1080p screen, the Colors, from my point of view are accurate, the viewing angles are really nice, I had decided not to try the 15″ Envy due to reviews I had heard about its apparent color problem, This 17″ screen is actually very good, one thing I enjoyed was when doing Java programming, seeing all your little IDE windows and still having enough screen space to code without having to scroll down continuously.

-Keyboard: This Hp laptop featured a back-lit keyboard, and once you get hooked on to it, there’s no going back. It’s just so comfortable, especially when I have to do onsite work and there is very little even no light present in the area where I’m working. Every keystroke on this island style keyboard feels solid, it is very comfortable when you to type on.

-Touchpad: After tweaking the settings of Synaptics, I managed to get my touchpad to work the way I wanted it to, however you should bear in mind that everybody has different likes. Despite some of the unfavorable reviews read by me. but as my experience, the left and right mouse buttons of this laptop’s touchpad are really easy to use, The double click feature in order to disable the touchpad is nice.

-Graphics: RadeonHD 7690M XT is a great graphic card, it with Dedicated 1024MB and up to 5093MB total graphics vram, even though it can not be called a gaming powerhouse, I have played games like WoW on High settings without even breaking a sweat.  I also have installed Skyrim; again there is no problems at high settings. I must say the automatic switching of graphics is definitely a plus.

-Audio: Even though the fact that this HP Envy laptop has Beats Audio was not a determining reason for me to purchase it, but I’m a believer now. I’d never purchase their headphones, but they have managed to do a great work with laptops, The  mute button and dedicated volume knob is very convenient feature.

-Ports: The HP ENVY 17 laptop is port happy, which was a improtant reason for me to buy this laptop. It features 4 USB ports, 3 of them are USB 3.0 is a plus. At my work, I had a 3 monitor setup,  So I’m very happy I can work with all 3 monitors.

-Hard Drive: it will be better, if this laptop contains a SSD , While it comes with a 7200 rpm 750 GB hard drive, I can’t complain too much about. I’d have paid a further $100 for a dual HDD and SSD.

-Keyboard: Though there nothing which is actually wrong with the keyboard so to speak, however by default, the function keys’ F1-F12 is not the default action, but rather the laptop functions. For example, if you want to refresh a webpage, you will have to hit function+F5. Though this setting can be disabled in BIOS, which essentially just flips it. This con to be honest is more of a habit of using certain keyboard shortcuts thane and a personal preference.

-Software: As expected, Many software is pre-installed. I just hope HP would give us a detailed description of what software they had installed. It took me about a 1 hour to figure out which software I could do without safely and correctly remove.

I’m really very happy with the HP Envy 17 laptop, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to buy a new laptop. Though this laptop is big, but you can have a good experience on playing gaming and watching movies, and one should consider the fact that you are buying this laptop to be mobile not all the time.
I think this laptop is ideal for anyone needing a mobile computer with the  graphics capabilities and processing power to handle games, HD movies and design job, I bought this laptop knowing pretty well what I was bargaining for and I’m happy to report that I got much more than what I had expected.
